Mr. John Ortolano

Hello, my name is Jay Ortolano and I teach Physical Education at Bella Vista Middle School. I am originally from Buffalo, New York where I knew immediately in elementary school, that one day I wanted to teach Physical Education due to the great experiences I had. I have always enjoyed being outdoors, engaging in sports and physical activity, so combining the two was a no brainer to me. I have worked with students in all grade levels including students with a variety of disabilities and have spent many years coaching baseball and hockey. I have 4 sons who have all gone through the great schools here at Temecula Valley Unified. One of the best things about my job is helping build self confidence in students who aren't very comfortable learning new physical skills, games, and sports. Everyone learns at a different pace and sometimes in a completely different way. I believe all kids can be successful and I work very hard to foster a safe, accepting, learning environment, that all students can strive to be successful in. Here's to a great year in Physical Education at BVMS.

  • GRADING

Students have the opportunity to earn 100 points per week.

50 points:  full participation to the best of your ability as an individual.

40 points:  passing run days and /or making up missed tun days

10 points:  dressing out every day in your own uniform w/ safe sneakers, on your number.

  • MEDICAL PE

Medical PE is for serious long term illnesses, broken bones, time to rehabilitate a serious injury, casts, surgeries.  Students must have a physicians note to be included in medical PE.  IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR COLDS, COUGHS, ASTHMA, TOO LONG OF A WEEKEND, etc.  After 3 excused absences with a parent note the student is required to have a doctor`s note.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE A DOCTORS NOTE FOR MEDICAL PE, NOT A PARENT NOTE

  • CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS PBIS

    1.  BE SAFE

    2.  BE RESPONSIBLE

    3.  BE RESPECTFUL

ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THE RULES.

  • RUN DAY

One day each week will consist of a run day.  All runs are timed and worth 40 percent of your weekly grade. I use the fitness gram standards for grading each time we run 1 mile.  If you miss a run day it must be made up at school within one week. Students are expected to stay on the dirt track and NEVER run or walk on the curb of the track in order to avoid injury. Lack of effort on any run day will result in the student receiving a zero for that particular run day for the week.

ALL MISSED RUN DAYS MUST BE MADE UP, AND AT SCHOOL.

  • ABSENCES AND MAKE UP WORK

If you are absent from PE it is your responsibility to do 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at home for each day missed. You must list the activity, time spent engaged in the activity, date the absence, and have your parent/guardian sign it and you must sign it. You must submit it to me personally in order to earn back your points. This must be completed within one week of the absence or you WILL NOT receive credit.. ALL MISSED RUN DAYS MUST BE MADE UP AT SCHOOL
