Ms. Elizabeth Portillo
Hello, and welcome to Ms. Portillo's speech-language program, part of the speech-language departmentat at La Vorgna Elementary School! My name is Elizabeth Portillo and I have been a speech-language pathologist for almost 23 years. I received my B.S. in speech pathology and audiology from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Following my undergraduate experience, I spent a year working as a speech aide in a private clinic and throughout Vista Unified School District. The experience and knowledge I obtained during that time were extremely valuable as I was able to learn from a variety of therapists and expand my understanding of childhood speech and language development.
Following my undergraduate experience, I pursued a Masters of Speech Pathology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At that time, I was fortunate to work as a graduate student for Dr. Gary Rentchler, who is well known for his research and contribution to stuttering therapy. I was also fortunate to work closely with Dr. Michael Kimelman, neurologically-based language disorder specialist and Dr. Diane Williams, who is well recognized in the speech pathology community for her work with autism and childhood language development. I currently hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as a Clinical and Rehabilitative Services Credential with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Since graduate school, I have worked in the school setting, private clinics, hospitals, contract agencies and home hospital. I love what I do and I adore the children I work with here at LES. Every day I feel blessed I have the opportunity to teach children as well as learn from them. I look forward to working closely with both you and your child(ren) to create a successful and warm learning environment! If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact me at (951) 294-6380 ext. 3015 or send me an email at eportillo@tvusd.us

"The power of words is that a life can be launched with as little as a single phrase, an uplifting word or an act of kindness. Think of the power we wield and the impact we can make if we become more intentional about encouraging our children. Our words are often the very things that help create future dreams." -Unknown
"Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate." — Anonymous
“When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments — tenderness for what he is and respect for what he may become.” — Louis Pasteur, French Chemist and Microbiologist
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." — Fred Rogers
