Hello Room 17 Families!
Thank you to everyone for signing up for Parent-Teacher Conferences this week! I am looking forward to meeting with each of you and talking about the amazing progress your child has already made this year! Remember that students will be released at 1:00 all week, to allow for the Conferences in the afternoon. Also, the modified days have changed our "specials" schedule for this week. PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday instead of Monday and Friday. Library will remain on Wednesday.
On Friday, our class enjoyed a very special presentation from Ruby's dad, Firefighter Hibbard! He volunteered to teach the kids all about fire safety, and working as a firefighter. They were all "sworn in" and received cool firefighter hats and badges, as well. It was a highlight of the week, for sure! Please ask your kids about "Stay low and go!" and "Stop drop and roll!" as well as a fire safety plan for your home. Thank you so much Hibbard family! If any other parents would like to talk to our class about important jobs they do in our community, please let me know. Our ELA unit has been focusing on that topic!
Most students have mastered or are making tremendous progress on their "Doubles" and "Friends on 10" facts! Way to go! Keep studying in short bursts with the flashcards until mastered. Knowing these facts automatically really helps students over the long haul. (I have taught 2nd and 3rd as well, so I have seen that the older kids who master their facts early on see math as fun, whereas the kids who still rely on their fingers struggle.) Also, knowing addition facts makes our new subtraction unit easier, as students see the relationship between addition (2+3=5) and subtraction (5-2=3).
In ELA, our phonics focus will be on the short u sound, we will focus on nouns and verbs in Grammar. You will be so proud of them when you see the writing projects they have worked on at Conferences!
Lastly, thank you to every one who signed up to help or donate items for our Halloween Rotations on Tuesday, October 29th! Please send in all donations prior to October 25. We have such wonderful families in Room 17! There are still a few slots available, so please go to "Links" on the left side of my website, and then click on "Room Mom Page" if you would like to sign up! It will be lots of fun! Students are allowed to dress up on Halloween as a favorite book character, as we will celebrate "Live Literature Day" on October 31 (no masks/weapons).
Looking forward to a great week!
