BA Mathematics, SDSU MA Teaching, USC

Mr. Stephenson

This is my first year here at TVHS and I am very excited to be a new Bear!  I have a B.A. in mathematics from SDSU, a M.A. in teaching from USC and my full mathematics teaching credential. I have two years of experience teaching in Burkina Faso, West Africa and five years teaching in Los Angeles Unified School District. I have taught Common Core Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 as well as AP Calculus AB and BC.

I love math; the beauty that it holds and the meaning that it allows us to bring to tfhe world. I also love sharing my passion for math with my students and inspiring them to enjoy math. I truly believe that everyone is capable of learning and appreciating mathematics at the highest levels. I also believe that students learn best when they feel safe, are challenged, work collaboratively and when they are given clear objectives with meaningful feedback. If you ask my students about my class, they will say that it is challenging yet supportive and enjoyable. They will say that I put a lot of myself into my teaching and expect for them to invest a lot of themselves into their learning. Students often tell me that AP Calculus was the hardest class they ever had but that they learned so much along the way and would do it again.

In my class, I teach students that learning is a process that takes time, effort, struggle and mistakes. I know that I can teach students any level of math by encouraging them to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, accept feedback and reflect.  I continuously strive to develop students’ growth mindset so they can reach new heights and create success for themselves.

This year, I am pursuing my National Boards Certification, presenting at the California Mathemaics Council conference for math teachers, and countinuing my professional development with the organization Math for America Los Angeles.
