College Kick Off is Back!!

  • What is College Kick Off Day?

College Kickoff focuses on college and career readiness and is connected to the Riverside County Office of Education Pledge—that all students in Riverside County will graduate from high school well prepared for college and the workforce. Additionally, the campaign is an outgrowth of the Riverside County Education Collaborative that was lauded in 2014 by President Barack Obama for increasing college-going rates in the Inland Empire.

  • Seniors:

Please take a moment to give us your honest feeback about today's events. Thanks!

CKO for Freshmen

  • On October 25th, the freshmen will be taking the PSAT 8/9. The test is free. The purpose of the test is to establish a starting point in terms of college and career readiness. It's a great way to not only practice for the PSAT/NMSQT that is taken sophomore year, but to also identify where students may need additional support.  The test consists of Reading, Writing, and Math. We also use these scores to determine which AP courses may be a good fit for the students. Please click the link below to read more about the PSAT 8/9.

CKO for Sophomores

  • On October 25th, the sophomores will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. The test is free for sophomores only. Students will begin taking the actual SAT in the spring of their junior year. The PSAT is a great way to get prepped! In addition, College Board uses these scores to generate the AP Potential data. These reports give recommendations of which AP classes would be a good fit for the students. The counseling dept uses this information to send invitations for the AP presentations that are given by the AP teachers prior to course selection for the next school year. Please click the link below for more information about the PSAT/NMSQT.

CKO for Juniors

  • On October 25th, the juniors will either take the PSAT/NMSQT or the ASVAB. The cost of the PSAT/NMSQT is $20. Please click here to go to the CHS Webstore. Type PSAT into the Search bar to order the test. The ASVAB is offered free of charge. Both tests offer some great qualities.

The PSAT/NMSQT, though a practice SAT, is also a competition for the National Merit Scholarship. It is important for students to do their best as their scores are factored in the qualifying decision. This year, four Chaparral seniors were notified that they are National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists based off their PSAT/NMSQT scores from their junior year! Winning the scholarship means money for college. Click below to read an article on the CollegeRaptor.com website that goes into more detail about the scholarship. There are only a small number of tests available to sell so don't delay!

The ASVAB, or the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is a test administered by the Armed Forces. Our students take the Student ASVAB, which is a great tool used for career exploration. We also do a test interpretation during second semester, which allows the students to see their strengths in different fields and shows which colleges support their interests. CKO for Seniors

  • The Seniors have two options:

    The Next Level Conference

The purpose of the conference is to give students some options to consider as they start planning for the next level of their lives. At the start of the day, students will check in to their assigned classes where they will be shown a presentation containing important information about graduation, how to order caps and gowns, senior pictures, etc. Following the presentation, breakfast options will be offered. After breakfast, the conference begins. Students will be given brochures containing all sessions offered, complete with descriptions and locations. The Counseling department is working hard to secure presenters in order to offer a wide variety of sessions to choose from. These sessions consist of presenters from various professions, trade schools, all branches of the military, community colleges, and four-year universities. There will also be a number of college applications and financial aid workshops. We have had the opportunity to present our CKO conference model multiple times to other counseling departments across Riverside County and it has been adopted by other schools in the last few years. We are very excited for our seniors to enjoy everything this conference has to offer! More details to come.
