Mr. Mark R. Garner

The things to know about me - Family Always Comes First - mine and yours!  I am passionate about teaching, mentoring, and coaching.  My interests are mathematics, science, technology, music, sports, games, recreation, traveling, history, and science fiction.  Over the past 20 years, I have coached track & field, baseball, and basketball for youth/middle school in Escondido and Temecula.  I have worked in public education for more than 21 years.

My family and I have lived in the Temecula-Murrieta area for the past 18 years and we have lived in the Harveston community of Temecula since 2005.  I have been married for 19 years to my beautiful wife, Karen, who has been a teacher for over 20 years and in TVUSD since 2000, teaching primary elementary grades - at Vintage Hills, La Vorgna, and currently Nicolas Valley.  We have four wonderfully amazing children! Our youngest, our daughter, attends with my wife at Nicolas Valley. My youngest son attends Bella Vista MS. My two oldest sons attend Chaparral HS. My mother lives with us too. We also have a dog and two cats.

I was born and raised in the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia metropolitan area, attending high school in downtown D.C.  I spent two years at the University of Maryland, College Park majoring in engineering while participating in a consortium program with The George Washington University as a midshipman with the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.  I moved to San Diego/La Jolla area, transferred to San Diego City College, graduating with an Associate’s of Science Degree in Physical Sciences with a Certificate of Achievement in Physics. I transferred to U.C. San Diego, majoring in computer science and cognitive science, before completing a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology with a minor through the Teacher Education Program in the Cultural Context of Teaching and Learning.

I decided to become a teacher and attended CSU, San Marcos, where I received my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential with Special Preparation for Working with Middle Level Students in Grades 5-8 and a Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Emphasis and Supplementary Authorizations in Mathematics and Science.  I received my Administrative Services Credential and my Master’s of Arts in Education, completing my Master’s Thesis on the Effectiveness of a Middle School Math Remediation Program in the Escondido Union School District where I worked as a teacher and site administrator.

I taught middle school for six years - mathematics and science in Escondido and math, journalism, and yearbook at Margarita MS here in TVUSD.  I served as a middle school assistant principal, elementary principal, and middle school principal in Escondido. I was the Director of Human Resources and an Assistant Superintendent in Valley Center – Pauma Unified School District.  While serving as the Director of Human Resources for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, I earned my Society of Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certification. After 15+ years in management, I sought out an opportunity to teach again to work in the classroom with students in my hometown and I am so happy to be back doing what I love - teaching kids!

I look forward to working with you and your children!

Sincerely,

Mark R. Garner
