Mathematics Department Course Syllabus Course: IB HL Mathematics
Description:
The course focuses on developing important mathematical concepts in a comprehensible, coherent and rigorous way. This is achieved by means of a carefully balanced approach. Students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems set in a variety of meaningful contexts. Development of each topic should feature justification and proof of results. Students embarking on this course should expect to develop insight into mathematical form and structure, and should be intellectually equipped to appreciate the links between concepts in different topic areas. They should also be encouraged to develop the skills needed to continue their mathematical growth in other learning environments. The internally assessed component, the exploration, offers students the opportunity for developing independence in their mathematical learning. Students are encouraged to take a considered approach to various mathematical activities and to explore different mathematical ideas. The exploration also allows students to work without the time constraints of a written examination and to develop the skills they need for communicating mathematical ideas. This course is a demanding one, requiring students to study a broad range of mathematical topics through a number of different approaches and to varying degrees of depth. Students wishing to study mathematics in a less rigorous environment should therefore opt for one of the standard level courses, mathematics SL or mathematical studies SL.
Student Expectations:
Students are expected to adhere to all TVUSD behavior policies. Preparation includes being on time with
required material including notebook, pencil/eraser, graphing calculator and any other materials designated by
the teacher. The schools tardy policy will be strictly enforced. Be Engaged. Please leave all distracting ite out of
the classroom (i.e. food, drinks, iPods, video games, graphing calculator games, etc.). Cell phones must be
turned off during class time and may not be used as calculators.
G Grades:
Grades will be based on a combination of tests, quizzes, in class assignments, homework, and a final. Grades will
be calculated using weighted categories: Tests = 65%; Final 15%; Quizzes = 10%; and Homework = 10%. The
following grading scale will be used to determine letter grades:100-86% ...A 85-72%...B 71-58%...C below b 58%...F
Office Hours:
I will be available on a regular basis. I will be available everyday from 6:30-7:30. I will also be available upon
request. I am here to help, so if you need help, PLEASE let me know!!!!
Homework:
I am a firm believer in homework. In math, you learn through
practice. Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and will be turned in for
credit. All homework w
ill be collected on the Friday after it was assigned. If you
don’t know how to do a problem
–
MAKE AND ATTEMPT!! DON’T JUST GIVE UP!!!
Questions regarding the homework can be addressed during intervention, before
school, at lunch, or after school. Very lit
tle class time will be allotted to specifically
going over the homework. Students who fail to stay current on their homework will
not be eligible for a retake of a test if they do not do well. No credit will be given for
late work.
Tests/Quizzes:
Quizzes
will usually be given midway between units. Tests will be
given at the end of each unit. No retakes for quizzes will be offered. Retakes will be
allowed for tests in this class under the following conditions.
a) It has to be within two weeks, unless I set
a different time.
b) All homework for the unit must be compl
eted.
The maximum grade you ma
y receive on a test retake is a
71%.
Absences:
I expect you to look at the notes from wh
en you are absent and come in
with them complete. USE THE WEBSITE.
Academic Integrity:
Academic dishonest will not be tolerated. If you are found to
have committed academic dishonesty, a zero will be awarded for that grade and you
will not be given the op
portunity to make this grade up. Disciplinary action will be
taken. If I find anyone copying the work of anyone else all guilty parties will receive
zeroes and disciplinary action will be taken. You will not be given the opportunity to
make up this grade.
