Why now? Based on the energy pyramid model (conservation first, then energy efficiency and finally renewable energy) we were at the right place to consider renewable energy. Coupled with current economic incentives, this was the right time for TVUSD to add solar energy to the current energy management and conservation program.
Key points:
** Approximately 20 sites now have solar. Based on a variety of determining factors, not all sites were good candidates.
** TVUSD entered into a solar power purchase agreement (sPPA) with Solar City so there was no upfront cost to the district. (Follow this link to learn about sPPA's.) The only obligation is to pay Solar City for the energy generated. The cost of this electricity is at a lower rate than currently being paid to SCE. In addition, TVUSD negotiated a “no escalator” contract. Simply put, this means the price paid for Solar Energy will not increase over the life of the 25 year contract!
** Solar is not free. Sizing of the arrays is based on current usage. Any increase in this usage will mean higher energy bills. This means that the current model of energy conservation will not change.
