Mr. Sonny Lazo

Personal: I spent my childhood in the Philippines, my teenage years in Honolulu, and my adult years in Riverside and Temecula. I married Robin Lyn Raskin on Thanksgiving Day, 2015. I have been blessed with 3 adult children and three granddaughters. I've been a pastor at Atria Park at Vintage Hills Senior Community and the Chateau for the past 20 years. My interests include Bible study at Harveston Lake, trips to the beach and the mountains with my wife, and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and boxing. My dream vacation would be to visit Israel.

Professional: I hold a Master's Degree in Teaching from San Diego Christian College, received my BS in PE and Teaching Credential from California Baptist University, and my Learning Handicap Credential from UCR (University of California, Riverside). I also took graduate courses at the University of Hawaii. I've been teaching for 39 years, with 33 spent in Special Education. I've been with TVUSD for 26 years, with the past 20 here at Barnett. I started my career by teaching at Christian schools for six years.

Educational Philosophy: I believe that almost all wrong behavior is rooted in wrong relationships. My motto is: Kids don't care how much I know until they know how much I care. Being loved is the greatest motivator for change and building bridges with love, grace, and compassion is the first step.

Trust and Teamwork: Optimum personal and academic success comes only through daily home-school communication and unwavering parent-teacher partnership. Because trust and bridge-building are important to me, I provide each parent with my personal cell number on the first day of school.

Gratitude: Parents, thank you for entrusting your child to me. I have been blessed with a caring, compassionate, and competent staff to support me and student learning. We are confident everyone in room 46 will have a highly fruitful school year.
