The community input process for the development of the 2017/18 LCAP plan began with the launch of a district-wide survey.  The survey received input from February 22 through March 3, 2017. TVUSD families, staff, and students in grades 6-12, participated in the survey.

In March, the District hosted community input meetings to review survey information received along with the new state dashboard data.

The Board held a workshop on April 10, 2017 to receive all of the data collected and review the draft LCAP Actions and Services Plan for 2017/18.  Following the Board's workshop, the CAP (Community Advisory Meetings) by region began on April 17.

Following the CAPs, advisories, and public input process, the Board hosted an LCAP workshop on May 30, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. to review all of the information received from the April/May input gathering sessions.

On May 30, 2017, the Board reviewed all data, input, and information collected to date.  As a result, the Board made some recommended modifications to the 2017/18 LCAP Actions and Services Draft Plan. The recommended modifications have been incorporated into the 140 page Complete Draft LCAP Plan/Annual Update.  The LCAP input process continues with two more opportunities for public review and feedback.

Temecula Dollars for Scholars® (TDFS), a local 501c(3) nonprofit providing scholarships to qualified graduating seniors in the Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD), will host its annual scholarship night on Monday, May 15, in the Golden Bear Theater at Temecula Valley High School (TVHS). Doors open at 6 PM for student check in. Student attendance is mandatory for scholarship(s) to be awarded. Only students who received an invitation and followed directions to reply will be guaranteed seating.

Scholarship recipients and their families should plan to arrive before 6:30 PM, when the program starts. All scholarship donors are invited to a special 5:30 PM reception in the newly-opened TVHS Culinary Arts Center. Culinary students will create and serve complimentary refreshments.Scholarship donors include individuals and families, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, and other local business, education, and community leaders.  The TVHS Golden Bear Theater is located at 31355 Rancho Vista Road  in Temecula.

Celebrating three decades of service to TVUSD graduates, this year’s TDFS awards night is hosted by TVHS, the site of the group’s inception. TDFS was founded in 1987 by a small group of parents, teachers, and community members as Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Temecula Valley. Today its all-volunteer board operates as part of a national nonprofit educational service known as Scholarship America. This year, TDFS will present more than $150,000 in local scholarships. Over its history, it has awarded more than $2.7 million to graduating seniors from Chaparral High School, Great Oak High School, Sparkman Alternative Education Center, and Temecula Valley High School.

“What makes the TDFS application process unique is that, with the completion and submission of one online application, TVUSD graduates have an opportunity to be considered for scholarships awarded by their high schools, as well as local and national organizations,” said Lynn Shaver, TDFS President. “After high school graduation and throughout their post-secondary training, they can continue using their online profiles to search for additional national scholarships,” she added.

TDFS scholarships are awarded to help students pursuing any post-secondary training, not just college or university degrees. Students planning to attend certificate, associate degree, or trade school programs are eligible to apply for TDFS scholarships. Locally, the minimum grade point average is a 3.00; however, for national scholarships, requirements vary, and many do not have a minimum GPA, Shaver said.

The minimum TDFS scholarship amount awarded is $250; local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals/families are encouraged to support the scholarship fund by making a pledge for 2018. For information and a pledge form, see its website,www.temecula.dollarsforscholars.org

The following information was emailed to GOHS families and staff on Thursday evening.

There is a rumor circulating tonight on social media forums regarding a threat made against GOHS tomorrow. Please know that there is no validity to the threat. A student inappropriately made comments in a joking manner in a class this afternoon. The student was immediately interviewed by police and school admin and it was determined not to be credible. It was an unfortunate and irresponsible action on the student's part. We take threats very seriously and if there was any cause for concern, we would have notified you immediately. The original interaction was limited in scope and the involved students and families were contacted by admin earlier today. We apologize for not sharing previously as we believed it was handled and not a credible threat that we needed to notify families about. However, in light of the current rumors circulating, we wanted to advise you that it has been handled by the appropriate authorities and we are confident there is no cause for alarm.

Temecula Valley Unified School District has partnered with the California College Guidance Initiative (CCGI) to systematically increase career and college preparation for 6th-12th grade students primarily through the use of the student facing site, CaliforniaColleges.edu. CaliforniaColleges.edu is a resource that captures critical student data, including transcript data, to ensure a thoughtful, well-informed, and smooth transition from high school to higher education. Specifically, transcript data is used to apply to California State University (CSU) campuses and also for the purposes of monitoring “a-g” subject requirement completion (course sequence students are required to successfully complete to be eligible to apply to CSU and University of California).

For non-participation in the California College Guidance Initiative, parents must submit a written request of non-participation to TVUSD by Monday, October 17, 2016.

Did you ever say to yourself, “There Ought to be a law…”?

This month California State Senator Jeff Stone (R-Riverside County) is launching his second annual “There Ought to be law” contest for high school students in the 28th Senate District.

The district, which is entirely in Riverside County, stretches from the vineyards of the Temecula Valley to the Colorado River and includes the cities of Blythe, Canyon Lake, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, Lake Elsinore, La Quinta, Murrieta, Temecula, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Wildomar.

Last year our office received more than 70 entries from high school students across the district.

Alyson White, a senior at Rancho Mirage High School, was last year’s winner for her bill to increase the penalties for those abuse animals.

Senator Stone introduced her bill, SB 1395, and Alyson and her mother were guests of the Senator in Sacramento in April 2016 when Alyson testified before a Senate committee.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students to actually participate in the legislative process.

Attached please find a press release, flyer and a link to the Senator’s website -- http://stone.cssrc.us/content/there-ought-be-law --where the entry form can be found. Students can fill out the form on-line or download it and sent it in.

The deadline is December 2, 2016.

All 9-12 graders are eligible to participate who live in the 28th District are eligible to enter.

Thanks for your help and if you have any questions check the Senator’s website --- www.Senate.ca.gov/Stone

Calling all high school & college students, veterans and others in career transition. Join us Saturday August 27 at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.at city hall for a career technical education (CTE) showcase hosted by the City of Temecula, TVUSD, MSJC, and CSUSM.

The City of Temecula would like to invite you to the Career Technical Education (CTE) Symposium that will be held on

Saturday, August 27th, 2016

10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Temecula Conference Center

The event will consist of Career Technical Education keynote speakers that will talk about High School, Community College/University, and re-entering workforce CTE programs. Complimentary breakfast will be provided for all attendee’s. Below is more information about what CTE is and the successful ways that CTE programs help students of all ages prepare for a successful career in the future.

Career Technical Education is a term that is applied to schools, institutions, and educational programs that specialize in skilled trades, applied sciences, modern technologies and career preparation.

Career and technical education is often stigmatized, and there is a widespread perception that career and technical centers provide a lower quality education or that students who attend such schools are less capable or have lower aspirations.

These perceptions are lingering stereotypes associated with traditional “vocational” programs of past decades. Students enrolled in career and technical programs can and do outperform students in more traditional academic settings.

Career and technical programs frequently offer both academic and career-oriented courses, and many provide students with the opportunity to gain work experience through internships, job shadowing, on-the-job training, and industry-certification opportunities.

If you have any questions regarding this event you can contact Charles Walker at (951) 694-6468 orcharles.walker@cityoftemecula.org.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Summer Bases Camp families,

We had an unfortunate incident late this afternoon involving an unarmed man jumping the fence asking to gain access to basketballs and kids toys.  Despite some reports being posted on social media, he did not have a weapon. The only item found on him was a water bottle. The man became unruly when asked to leave and staff restrained him while sending students to classrooms for safety.  Police came and took him into custody without further incident.

Please understand that it takes time to determine the accuracy of the information involved in an incident and a police investigation of the facts before we can do a mass notification.  Our students and staffs safety is always paramount and we will notify affected families as soon as we have information to share.  If this had been an incident where children or staff were in any direct harm, we would have contacted you during the incident to advise of a lockdown situation. However, it resolved itself quickly without further incident and we immediately directed our attention to returning students to normal activities as well as coordinating student pick up.

We appreciate your understanding and if you have any concerns or questions please contact the Bases Program Coordinator Marilyn Skrbin.

What kinds of students choose TAVS?
AVS serves sixth through twelfth grade students for whom attending a traditional school is not possible or practical, providing them with a free, flexible, challenging and individualized educational experience. Because students complete their coursework online at times that work best for them, TAVS allows them to pursue their dreams and their diplomas at the same time. Types of students who choose TAVS: athletes, artists, homeschoolers. students with unique needs.

Will TAVS prepare my student for college?
Already, TAVS graduates have been accepted to some of the most prestigious universities in the United States. That’s because TAVS is not a credit recovery program for struggling students. In fact, the standards-based curriculum requires typical students to spend at least 30 hours a week on their studies!

Under a new law known as SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 exemptions based on personal beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California.  Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations. Personal beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.

Personal Belief Exemption (PBE) forms on file with the District by January 8, 2016 remain valid until a student enrolls in transitional kindergarten/kindergarten or 7th grade.

PBE forms are available on the Shots for School website http://eziz.org/assets/docs/CDPH-8262.pdf

A good resource is the “shots for school” website.  http://www.shotsforschool.org/laws/sb277faq/
