Scholarly Journals and open access

#6 Scholarly journals

The scholarly cycle

Harvard  and other major universities encouraging publication in  open access journals and rather than use  publications that keep articles behind paywalls

Open access journals : Where to find them? DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. DOAJ is independent. All funding is via donations. PLOS ( Public Library of Science) Began in 2000 by Nobel Prize winner Harold Varmus, former director of the National Institutes of Health and at that time director of Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center; Patrick O. Brown, a biochemist at Stanford University; and Michael Eisen, a computational biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

PLOS is refining the definition, evaluation and recognition of scientific work, expanding toward a more Open Science while putting researchers back at the center of science communication

The PLOS journals are what it describes as "open access content";

all content is published under the Creative Commons "attribution" license Elservier (science)

The main argument against open access journals is the possible damage to the peer review system, diminishing the overall quality of scientific journal publishing.
